Biography

Studied at University of Victoria with Benjamin Butterfield. He is a 2017 graduate of the University of Michigan, where he studied with Stanford Olsen.
He was a participant in the Merola Opera Program at San Francisco Opera and the Britten–Pears Young Artist Programme in the UK.

In 2017-19 he was an artist with the Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Opera Center of Lyric Opera of Chicago, performing Odoardo in Ariodante, Le Doyen de la Faculté in Cendrillon, a Trojan in Idomeneo, the Emperor Altoum in Turandot, Ferrando in Così fan tutte. He sang opposite Susan Graham and Nathan Gunn as part of the Jazz Trio in Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti, in the “Celebrating 100 Years of Bernstein” concert at Lyric Opera of Chicago.

In the summer of 2018, Josh Lovell debuted as Count Almaviva in Il barbiere di Siviglia with the Aspen Music Festival and School.

In the 2018/19 season, he sang Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni and Don Ramiro in La Cenerentola with The New Generation Festival in Florence, Gonsalve in L’Heure Espagnol with Wolf Trap Opera and Poisson in Adriana Lecouvreur as part of Salzburg Festival’s Young Singer’s Project. On the Chicago concert stage, he debuted with Music of the Baroque, performing Bach’s Coffee Cantata, conducted by Jane Glover, as well as the Messiah with The International Music Foundation and Apollo Chorus. He also debuted the Evangelist in Bach’s St. Matthew Passion with the Victoria Philharmonic Choir in Canada, sang select Bach cantatas as well as the Magnificat with Baroque ensemble I Musici de Montréal, and performed a program of arias with the Kansas City Chamber Orchestra.

Engagements of the 2019/20 season included Mozart’s Requiem with the Vancouver Symphony and Victoria Choral Society and Handel’s Messiah with the Victoria Symphony.

From 2019, he has been an ensemble member at Vienna State, performing Lysander in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Lurcanio in Ariodante, Don Ramiro in La Cenerentola, Ernesto in Don Pasquale, Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni.

Past operatic work also includes Normanno in Lucia di Lammermoor and Bardolfo in Falstaff with Pacific Opera Victoria.

In 2020, he made his Bolshoi Theatre debut as Count Almaviva (Il Barbiere di Siviglia).

An avid concert performer, Josh Lovell has performed Messiah with the Toledo Symphony, Mozart’s Requiem with the Detroit Symphony Youth Orchestra, Bach’s Mass in b minor with The Handel Society, Handel’s Jephtha with the Oakland Choral Society and Bach’s St. John’s Passion with the Victoria Baroque Players.

Josh Lovell is the 2018 Grand Prize and Opera Prize winner at the 52nd Annual International Vocal Competition‘s-Hertogenbosch, in The Netherlands, the 2nd place winner of the 2018 Dallas Opera competition, 3rd place winner of the Marcello Giordani Foundation competition, and was a 2017 semi-finalist with the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.
