Biography

Born in Dae Gu (South Korea), Simon Lim graduated in 2007 at the Youngnam University in Gyeongsan and moved then to Italy to continue his studies at the Accademia di Perfezionamento of Teatro alla Scala. In the meantime, he received several awards and in particular he got the third place at Operalia 2010.

On the Scala stage, after his debut as Guccio in Gianni Schicchi under Chailly, he took part in productions of the Accademia with the title role in Le nozze di Figaro and Salzapariglia in Le convenienze ed inconvenienze teatrali and of the Season with Flamish Envoy with Gatti in the Don Carlo opening production and Tom in Un ballo in maschera.

Among the houses where he has been a regular guest the Palau de les Arts in Valencia, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv,Teatro the Arena in Verona, Opéra de Marseille…

A special relationship has been built with Teatro la Fenice, where he debuted as Yorg in Stiffelio and came back every Season with several roles, among them Balthasar in La favorite, Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor, Oroveso in Norma, Banco in Macbeth for the Chung-Michieletto Season opening production, Oroe in the Semiramide integral version, Timur in Turandot and Ramfis Aida. Simon performed also at Theatre de Chatelet in Paris (Conte Asdrubale in La pietra del Paragone), the Glyndebourne Festival (Zuniga in Carmen), Teatro Regio di Torino (Alidoro in Cenerentola), Opera de Bilbao (Yorg), Den Norske Opera in Oslo (Oroveso).

Among his recent and future engagements, Procida in I vespri siciliani in the Circuito dell’Emilia Romagna,Verdi Requiem in Innsbruck, Ratcliffe in Billy Budd at Teatro Carlo Felice in Genova, President Wu Virtu in the Mohammed Fairouz's new creation The new Prince in Amsterdam, Filippo II at Oper Frankfurt, Raimondo in Verona, Zaccaria in Marseille, Ramfis and Ferrando in Il trovatore at La Fenice, the opening of the Donizetti Festival in Bergamo in Belisario, the debuts at San Francisco Opera as Basilio in Il barbiere di Siviglia and at Canadian Opera, Aida at the Arena in Verona, Bianca e Fernando at Carlo Felice Theatre, Romèo et Juliette at San Diego Opera, Don Carlo and Nabucco in Marseille, Nabucco in Madrid, Il trovatore at La Fenice, Mefistofele in Modena and Piacenza, La Gioconda in Verona, Cremona, Pavia, Brescia and Como, Procida in I Vespri Siciliani at La Scala, Lucia di Lammermoor and Il trovatore at Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv.

In 2023 he made his Bolshoi Theatre debut as Filippo II (Don Carlo).
