Biography

Austrian baritone Markus Werba has performed at the world’s finest opera houses and concert venues, including Teatro alla Scala, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Bayerische Staatsoper, Wiener Staatsoper, Los Angeles Opera, Lyon Opera, Théâtre du Châtelet Paris, Metropolitan Opera New York, Suntory Hall Tokyo, Sydney Opera House, Opera House of National Grand Theatre Beijing and Teatro Colón Buenos Aires, and for the Baden-Baden, Salzburg, Gergiev, Tanglewood and Aspen festivals. He has worked with conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Jeffrey Tate, Ivor Bolton, Kent Nagano, Riccardo Muti, James Conlon, James Levine, Jean-Christophe Spinosi, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Daniel Barenboim, Emmanuel Villaume, Ivan Fischer, Daniele Gatti and Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, amongst others.

In 2016-2017 and beyond, his projects included opera performances at Teatro alla Scala in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Le nozze di Figaro (also at the New National Theatre Tokyo), Eugene Onegin in concert with the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra, followed by various operatic engagements in Bologna and Venice with Lucia di Lammermoor; as well as concerts with orchestras such as the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, and recitals at venues including the Wigmore Hall. Furthermore he has performed at the Metropolitan Opera and La Scala in Milan with Die Zauberflöte and Fierrabras by Franz Schubert.

In the season 2017-2018 he was engaged at the National Center for Performing Arts in Beijing with Don Giovanni, the Teatro La Fenice Venice with La traviata (Germont), the Liceo Barcelona with La favorite (Alphonse), the Teatro alla Scala with Fierrabras (Roland), the Grand Théâtre de Genève with Faust scenes (Doctor Marianus / Father Seraphicus) and the Teatro alla Scala with Die Fledermaus (Dr. Falke).

In the season 2018-2019 Markus Werba was heard in Don Giovanni with the title role at the Vienna State Opera and the Berlin State Opera, in Agnese at the Teatro Regio di Torino, in Ariadne Auf Naxos as Music Teacher and in Die Tote Stadt by Korngold at La Scala in Milan. Recent engagements include Don Pasquale at the Royal Opera House London, Eugene Onegin at the Rome Opera, Pelléas et Mélisande of Debussy (Golaud) at the Teatro alla Scala and Mahler’s 8th Symphony with the San Francisco Symphony.

His operatic highlights include Beckmesser in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at the Salzburg Festival and at the Staatsoper Berlin under the baton of Daniel Barenboim, Papageno in Die Zauberflöte at the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House and the Wiener Staatsoper, Rodrigo in Don Carlo for the New National Theatre Tokyo and Semperoper Dresden, Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte with the Theater an der Wien under Mo. Harnoncourt, Marcello in La Bohème and Harlequin in Ariadne auf Naxos at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden and Roland in Fierrabras at the Salzburg Festival. Also as Figaro and Beckmesser at La Scala, Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor at the Teatro La Fenice di Venezia and as Papageno in a worldwide cinema broadcast from the Metropolitan Opera New York.

He gives many concerts and recitals with the works of Mahler, Schumann, Schubert, Brahms, Liszt around the world at venues such as the Wigmore Hall, Berlin Philharmonic, Musikverein Wien, Théâtre du Châtelet Paris, at the Schubertiade in Schwarzenberg, Mozarteum Salzburg, Salle Pleyel and Philharmonie de Paris, Rudolfinum in Prague, Budapest, Teatro La Fenice, Rome, Milan, Buenos Aires, Turin, Geneva, Montreal, Suntory Hall and Bunkamura in Tokyo and many more.
