Biography
Armenian dramatic baritone Gevorg Hakobyan studied at the Komitas State Conservatory in Yerevan with Maestro Sergey Danielyan. In 2008, Gevorg was awarded both the Gold Medal and First Prize at the prestigious First International Pavel Lisitsian Baritone Competition in Moscow, and in 2011 was recognised as a Merited Artist of the Republic of Armenia.Gevorg starts the 2019/20 season as Scarpia at Teatro Regio Torino in Tosca. A sought-after guest of the Bolshoi Theatres, Gevorg then returns to Bolshoi by invitation of Tugan Sokhiev as Tomsky in Pique Dame, Gryaznoi in The Tsar’s Bride, Ibn-Hakia in Iolanta and Mazeppa (title role). Gevorg then returns to Oper Frankfurt as Don Carlo di Vargas (La forza del destino).
Recent highlights include Ibn-Hakia (Iolanta) at Palau de les Arts Valencia, Alfio (Cavalleria Rusticana) at Teatro Carlo Felice Genoa and The Bolshoi Theatre as Gryaznoi in Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Tsar’s Bride and Tomsky in Tchaikvosky’s Pique Dame and the Mariinsky Theatre as Scarpia (Tosca).
Highlights of previous seasons include Tomsky (Pique Dame) and Scarpia (Tosca) at Stuttgart Opera, debut at Teatro dell’Opera di Roma as Scarpia (returning for Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci), The Tsar’s Bride and Pique Dame at the Bolshoi Theatre, Simon Boccanegra (title role) at the Mariinsky Theatre under the baton of Valery Gergiev, Baron Scarpia (Tosca) and Gérard (Andrea Chénier) at Theater Kiel, Nabucco (title role) at Terme di Caracalla Rome and Scarpia at Teatro Communale di Bologna under Valerio Galli.
Gevorg has an ever-growing international reputation, performing regularly at multiple opera houses and theatres including the Mikhailovsky Theatre, Bolshoi Theatre, Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, Teatro Massimo di Palermo, Armenian National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet, Kiel Opera House, Hong Kong Cultural Centre and the Stars of the White Nights International Festival. In addition, Gevorg performs frequently at the Teatro Lirico in Cagliari, where he has already appeared in The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maiden Fevroniya (Fiodor), Eugene Onegin (title role), Cavalleria Rusticana (Alfio), Pagliacci (Tonio), I Shardana (Norace), and Cherevichki (Bes) and at Palau de les Arts Valencia in Aida (Amonasro), Cavalleria Rusticana (Alfio), Madama Butterfly (Sharpless) under Lorin Maazel and in Simon Boccanegra (Paolo Albiani) with Placido Domingo in the title role.
