Biography

Adina Nitescu studied at the Academia de Arte “George Enescu” in Bucharest with Georgeta Stoleriu, and then in the Opera Studio of the Bavarian State Opera with Josef Loibl. She currently studies with her husband, German bass Markus Hollop. Ms. Nitescu also was the winner of the 1991 Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition and the 1990 Pavarotti International Voice Competition.

Praised for her intense and moving interpretations of leading Italian lyric-spinto soprano repertoire, Romanian soprano, Adina Nitescu has delighted audiences in most of the world’s opera houses. She has been “celebrated enthusiastically” for her “violet, velvet, full-voiced tone” interpretation of Manon Lescaut as well as such roles as Madama Butterfly, Tosca, Margherita in Boito’s Mefitsofele and Maddalena in Giordano’s Andrea Chenier.

In the 2008/09 season Ms. Nitescu sang Cio-Cio-San in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly at the Dresden State Opera and at the Opera Colorado (Denver).

In the 2007/08 season Ms. Nitescu sang Cio-Cio-San at the Staatsoper in Berlin and at the Staatstheater in Karlsruhe and the title role of Manon Lescaut in Palermo and Catania.

For the 2006-07 season, Ms. Nitescu appeared with the Deutsche Opera Berlin in the title role of Manon Lescaut, conducted by Renato Palumbo and a fully staged production of Verdi’s Requiem, directed by Achim Freyer. Ms. Nitescu also appeared as Cio-Cio-San in Robert Wilson’s production of Madama Butterfly at the Nederlandse Opera. Other engagements included Elisabetta in Maria Stuarda at Dallas Opera.

Adina Nitescu opened the 2005-06 season with her debut as Tosca at Naples Teatro San Carlo. Other engagements included appearances at Deutsche Oper Berlin as Manon Lescaut and at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theater as Cio-Cio-San in Madama Butterfly in Robert Wilson’s famous production. Under the baton of Bruno Bartoletti, she sang Britten’s War Requiem in Parma, followed by performances of Manon Lescaut at the Vienna State Opera, directed by Robert Carsen and conducted by Marco Armiliato.

Among her engagements in the 2004-05 season were her debuts at Tokyo’s New National Opera as Mimi in La Boheme, as Maddalena in Andrea Chenier in a concert at the Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk Orchestra in Leipzig with Fabio Luisi conducting; and at The Metropolitan Opera as Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, conducted by Philippe Jordan.

Ms. Nitescu has appeared in many of the world’s opera houses including the Opera National de Paris, Milan’s La Scala, Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova, Maggio Musicale Firenze, Teatro La Fenice, Teatro Regio Torino, Glyndebourne Festival, Leipzig Opera, Cologne Opera, Hamburg State Opera, State Opera Bucharest, Houston Grand Opera, Los Angeles Opera, and Teatro Municipal de Santiago de Chile. She has also appeared in concert at the Parma Fesitval di Verdi and the Ravinia Festival in Chicago, under the baton of Christoph Eschenbach.
