Сергей Грицай

Biography

Graduated from the Vaganova Choreography School as well as the Choreography Department of the N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov Leningrad Conservatory. Graduated from the Rimsky-Korsakov Leningrad Conservatory (1984), Higher Director Courses at the Russian Ministry of Culture (1986).

He has staged scenes and plastic compositions in the operas The Queen of Spades by Tchaikovsky (directed by V. Fokin, Bolshoi Theatre), Demon by A. Rubinstein (directed by G. Trostyanetsky, The Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Music Theatre), Tchaikovsky’s Mazeppa (directed by Yuri Alexandrov), Prokofiev’s War and Peace and Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera at the Mariinsky Theatre (directed by Anton Konchalovsky at Teatro Regio, Italy).

He has also staged Schnittke’s Life with an Idiot and Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk (directed by G. Baranovsky, Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre). Worked on choreography and plastic scenes in the Metropolitan Opera productions of War and Peace (directed by A. Konchalovsky), Mazeppa (directed by Yu. Alexandrov), Adriana Lecouvreur by Cilea (directed by M. Lamos).

Collaborated with the following directors: M. Zakharov, S. Spivak, A. Morfov, A. Galibin, G. Dityatkovsky, N. Sheiko.

The director and choreographer of The Adventures of Shipov, or an Old Vaudeville based on a short novel by B. Okudzhava (the author of the stage version is N. Sadur), The Story of a Horse based on a short novel by L. Tolstoy, The Amateur Peasant Girl based on a short novel by A. Pushkin, Casanova based on the works of M. Tsvetaeva.
