Joachim Barth was born in Nordhausen in Thuringia and studied economics in Bochum and Wuppertal, while also attending a course in theatre studies in Munich. He has worked as a lighting designer in the fields of opera, ballet, the spoken theatre and the variety theatre and to date has lit around one hundred productions. Among the directors with whom he has worked are Yuri Lyubimov in Moscow, Andrzej Woron in Berlin and Rafael Aguilar in Madrid as well as Robert Wilson, Peter Brook, Antonio Gades and Peter Mussbach. For many years he was the technical director of Mbongeni Ngema’s Committed Artists theatre troupe in Johannesburg. He enjoys a particularly close working relationship with Peter Stein and in recent years has provided the lighting designs for Stein’s productions of Wagner’s Parsifal at the Salzburg Easter Festival, Schiller’s Wallenstein with the Berliner Ensemble in the city’s Kindl-Halle (he also worked as the technical director both on this production and on Stein’s earlier productions of Faust I and II), Kleist’s Der zerbrochene Krug for the Berliner Ensemble, an adaptation of Dostoevsky’s The Devils both in San Prancrazio and on tour, Sophocles’ Oedipus at Colonus at the 2010 Salzburg Festival, Verdi’s Macbeth at the 2011 Salzburg Festival, Verdi’s Don Carlo at the 2013 Salzburg Festival, Shostakovich’s The Nose both in Zurich and at the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome, Shakespeare’s King Lear at the Vienna Burgtheater and Verdi’s Aida at the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre in Moscow in 2014.

Joachim Barth has also organized and worked as technical director on some 3500 visiting productions in every major theatrical venue as well as at leading festivals all over the world and has been the technical director on a whole series of events held by various institutions, including the Berlin Arena, and festivals such as the Munich Biennale, where he has also helped to run the venues in question. Joachim Barth is currently executive partner of the Admiralspalast in Berlin. From 2002 to 2006, when it reopened, he was additionally responsible for its reconstruction and renovation.
