
Biography
Born in Yerevan into a family of musicians, Varduhi Abrahamyan earned her diplomas in Song and the Operatic Arts at the city’s conservatoire before moving to France where she won the Marseille Conservatoire Prize.From there, she was engaged by Marc Minkowski to perform Manuel de Falla’s El amor brujo at the Théâtre du Châtelet, and then to sing the roles of Polinesso (Ariodante) at Geneva’s Grand-Théâtre, Pauline (The Queen of Spades) at the Capitole in Toulouse, Maddalena (Rigoletto) at the Paris Opera, the Nancy Opera and the Théâtre de Caen. She has also sung the role of Nerestano (Bellini’s Zaïra) at the Montpellier Festival and for Radio France, as well as Rinaldo at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées.
She sang the role of the Page (Salomé) at the Paris Opera, Bersi (Andrea Chénier) at the Marseille Opera and at the Capitole in Toulouse, and she also played Arsace (Semiramide) at the Montpellier Opera. She was again invited to the Paris Opera for the roles of Cornelia (Giulio Cesare), and Pauline (The Queen of Spades). She performed the role of Lydia Tchoukovskaïa for the premiere of Bruno Mantovani’s opera, Akhmatova, at the Paris Opera.
She sang the role of Goffredo (Rinaldo) at the Glyndebourne Festival and made her debut in Saint-Etienne and Versailles in the role of Orphée (Orphée et Eurydice).
She sang the role of Malcolm (La Donna del lago) at Vienna’s Theater an der Wien, then the title role of Carmen in Toulon, Néris (Cherubini’s Médée) at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, Orphée (Orphée et Eurydice) at the Marseille Opera, Bradamante (Alcina) at the Zürich Opera, Isabella (L’italiana in Algeri) and Ottone (L’Incoronazione di Poppea) at the Paris Opera, as well as Dvorak’s Stabat Mater at the Festival de Saint-Denis.
She has participated in numerous concerts in Europe, performing, among others, the Wesendonck-Lieder at the Festival de la Chaise-Dieu.
Most recently, she sang Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater in Martigny and Lugano with Cecilia Bartoli, Rossini’s Stabat Mater at Accademia Santa Cecilia in Rome conducted by M° Nicola Luisotti, and she made her debut at Palau de les Arts in Valencia with Norma and Nabucco. Moreover, she returned to the Festival de Saint-Denis to perform Verdi’s Requiem.
In 2015 she took part in the Bolshoi Theatre production of Carmen, singing the title role.
