Camilla Tilling was born in Linkoping, Sweden, studied at the University of Gothenburg and graduated in 1998 from London’s Royal College of Music. Almost immediately her international opera career was launched at New York’s City Opera when she enjoyed enormous success as Corinna in a new production of Rossini’s Il viaggio a Reims and by the end of the 2001/2002 season, Camilla Tilling had made debuts at Covent Garden (Sophie with Simone Young), the Aix-en-Provence Festival (Susanna with Marc Minkowski), Glyndebourne Festival (Peter Grimes with Marc Wigglesworth), La Monnaie (Sophie with Antonio Pappano), the Met (Nanetta with James Levine) and at Sweden’s famous Drottningholm Festival (Pamina with Arnold Oestman).

Since then, Camilla Tilling’s opera career has gone from strength to strength. Highlights include Pamina (Philippe Jordan), Dorinda in Handel’s Orlando (Sir Charles Mackerras), Oscar (Antonio Pappano), Arminda/La Finta Giardiniera (Sir John Eliot Gardiner) and Gretel/Hansel und Gretel (Robin Ticciati) at Covent Garden; Rosenkavalier, Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Pelleas et Melisande for Gothenburg Opera; Iole in Handel’s Hercules (William Christie) and Rosina (Daniele Gatti) at the Aix-en-Provence Festival; Zerlina at the Met (Sir Andrew Davis); Gretel for Geneva Opera (the late Armin Jordan); Ilia at La Scala (Daniel Harding), also recorded for DVD; Sophie for Chicago Lyric Opera (Sir Andrew Davis); Susanna for the San Francisco Opera (Roy Goodman); Sophie and Susanna at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Munich; Ilia (Thomas Hengelbrock), Oscar (Semyon Bychkov) and Susanna (Sylvain Cambrelang) for the Opera National de Paris; Governess/Turn of the Screw for the Glyndebourne Festival (Ed Gardner), l’Ange/St Francois d’Assise for De Nederlandse Opera (Ingo Metzmacher) and Gretel at the Saito Kinen Festival, Japan (Seiji Ozawa).

Camilla Tilling is equally at home on the concert platform or in recital and has appeared at the Salzburg and Vienna Festivals, the BBC Proms, London’s Wigmore Hall, New York’s Carnegie Hall, Berlin’s Philharmonie and with many of the world’s leading conductors and orchestras. Concert highlights include Haydn’s Creation with the LA Philharmonic/Salonen, Haydn’s Seasons with the Danish Radio/Gardiner, Grieg’s Peer Gynt with l’Orchestre National de France/Masur, Mozart’s C-minor Mass with the San Francisco Symphony/Metzmacher, Chicago Symphony/Salonen and Orchestre de Paris/Jarvi; Brahms’ Requiem with Ivor Bolton in Salzburg, Semyon Bychkov in Koeln and Marek Janowski in Berlin; Handel’s Messiah with the Berlin Philharmonic/Christie and with Le Concert d’Astree/Haim; Mendelssohn’s Elijah in Munich with Thomas Hengelbrock and Beethoven’s Ah! Perfido in Stockholm with Sakari Oramo. Last season, Camilla Tilling joined Sir Simon Rattle, Peter Sellars and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra for highly-acclaimed semi-staged performances of Bach’s St Matthew Passion at Birmingham Symphony Hall, Berlin’s Philharmonie and at the Salzburg Easter Festival.

In 2010 she appeared with the Bolshoi Theatre Symphony Orchestra under Benjamin Pionnier. In 2013 she performed the role of Sophie (Der Rosenkavalier) at the Bolshoi.

Camilla Tilling features on several recordings: Cherubini Mass in D minor with Riccardo Muti (EMI); Mahler Symphony No 4 with the Philharmonia/Zander (Telarc); Belinda in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas and the Angel in Handel’s La Resurrezione with Emanuelle Haim, Grieg’s Peer Gynt with Paavo Jarvi (all on Virgin Classics) and Mozart’s C-minor Mass/Beethoven’s Ah! Perfido with Paul McCreesh (DG Archiv). Camilla Tilling’s first solo recording — Rote Rosen, a selection of Lieder by Richard Strauss with Paul Rivinius (BIS) — was released in 2009 to unanimous critical acclaim with a second recording for BIS of Schubert songs planned for release in 2011.
